Politician appointed Minister of Education

President Danilo Medina has replaced education professional Josefina Pimentel as Minister for Education with his trusted political ally, Carlos Amarante Baret. President Medina also designated Antonio Pena Mirabal as the new deputy administrative minister at the Ministry of Education, replacing Giselle Felix. Luis Enrique Matos de la Rosa is to be deputy minister for technical and teaching affairs at the Ministry, taking over from Minerva Vincent. The Ministry of Education manages a budget of around RD$100 billion, the largest of all cabinet ministries.

At the start of the Medina administration in August 2012, Amarante was appointed to direct the Dominican Telecommunications Institute (Indotel). Before this, he was director of the Department of Immigration during one of the President Leonel Fernandez administrations. Amarante is a member of the PLD Political Committee, the party’s decision-making entity.

His replacement at Indotel is fellow politician Gedeon Santos. At the time of his appointment Santos was a member of the Central American Parliament (Parlacen).

Over the weekend of 20-21 July, the President also announced the appointment of Jose Joaquin Dominguez Pena as director of the State Sugar Board (CEA), replacing Enrique Martinez. He also appointed Mario Perez Molina to the National Grape Institute, in place of Carlos Manuel Perez.

President Medina also made changes to the board of the Agricultural Bank, and secondary positions at the National Drinking Water Institute (Inapa), Proindustria, Dominican Refinery Board, and the Presidency Social Plan.
