Iguana hatchery outside Cueva de las Maravillas

Over ten years ago, with sponsorship from the Banco Popular and its CEO, Alejandro Grullon, a cave located between San Pedro de Macoris and La Romana came under the aegis of the Cueva de las Maravillas Foundation. Listin Diario reports that the cave was first explored in around 1926 by young adventurers from San Pedro de Macoris, who uncovered pre-Columbian artwork deep inside. The foundation has prepared several hundred yards of lit pathways inside the cave and there are many amenities for tourists. Outside the cave, the thousands of visitors can see the largest rhinoceros iguana hatchery in the world. The endangered species is kept under the care of keepers, professionals in their field and a maintenance crew that guards the iguanas and their young. During the summer months the females come into heat and the large males fight for the right to the females. Foundation president Julio Giraldez says that the iguanas are kept in the hatchery in order to preserve the species.
