The Chamber of Deputies passed the two readings required for approval of changes in the Penal Procedures Code. Penalties are established for judges and prosecutors who it is determined provide lenient treatment to those found in violation of the law. The president of the Chamber of Deputies said that the objective is to reduce the loopholes criminals have used to evade the weight of the law.
The bill also carries changes in treatment of occupation of private property, forgery of bank checks and increases preventive custody to 36 months in complex cases.
The bill now moves to the Senate for approval but needs to be approved on Friday, given that the legislature ends this week and will not be resumed until 16 August, unless President Medina calls for an extraordinary session.
