Vargas Maldonado has yet to set date for CEN meeting

The president of the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD), Miguel Vargas Maldonado, said during a speech on Thursday, 25 July to the whole country, that his term ends in February 2014 and that he would convene the National Executive Committee (CEN) to meet. He did not set a date.

The opposing faction within the PRD head by former President Hipolito Mejia has said that Vargas Maldonado was elected for a term that expired on 19 July.

“With the passage of the days, the developments, the rule of law and reason, it has been definitively clear that the preservation and institution of the PRD relies on legitimate authorities, elected by an overwhelming majority in the 27th National Convention of 27 2009. He said he officially started his term on 28 February 2010 and so the exercise would end in February 2014.

He called for the unity of the organization to be based on the will of the majority, the law, discipline and party statutes. He called for peace within the organization and respect for its by laws and statutes.

“I believe in respect for institutions, the coexistence in the peace of the diversity of opinion in the party ranks, as a fundamental element of democratic strength of the PRD,” he said.

Meanwhile, Vargas is contesting in court a restraining order on political party’s funds deposited in Dominican banks. 23 provincial party leaders had obtained a court judgement freezing the political parties funds in the Popular, Reservas, Ademi, Progreso, Scotiabank, Santa Cruz, Leon, Vimenca, Asociacion la Nacional de Ahorros y Prestamos, Bancamerica, Asociacion Popular de Ahorros y Prestamos, Promerica, Lopez de Haro, Asociacion La Nacional de Ahorros y Prestamos, Banco Peravia, Asociacion Cibao de Ahorros y Prestamos, Banesco and Citibank.
