Puerto Rican-born actor Amaury Nolasco has the stellar role as heroic Lieutenant Amado Garcia Guerrero in the film, “El Teniente Amado” that opens 1 August in movie theaters in the Dominican Republic.
The script was written by Dominican leading news commentator Huchi Lora who said he was motivated to reach out to new generations to tell them about life under dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo. The film chronicles the end of the Trujillo era between 1959 and 1961.
Also staring are Ben Cornish as Attorney General Robert Kennedy; Mecedes Renard as Carmen Soto; Enrique Castillo as Johnny Abbes, Efrain Figueroa as General Rafael Leonidas Trujillo, Victor Vidal as President Balaguer, among other historic characters.
Nolasco told Diario Libre that the role for him was a honor. Born in Puerto Rico, Nolasco is the son of Dominican parents. “First because this is he land where my parents were born, so there is Dominican blood in my veins, and who would have said that I would play such an important role as that of the Lieutenant Amado Garcia Guerrero,” he told the newspaper.
Nolasco told Diario Libre that he plans to return with other film projects he has in mind. He praised the Dominican people he worked with on the film and said he was amazed at the film locations.
“I feel like I’ve discovered a cave full of jewels and gold and you just have to go looking.”
