The president of the Dominican Revolutionary Party, (PRD), Miguel Vargas, was elected on Saturday, 27 July as the new president of the International Socialist Committee for Latin America and the Caribbean, SICLAC, taking over from the ex Panamanian president, Martin Torrijos.
Peggy Cabral, widow of the late party leader Jose Francisco Pena Gomez, and who is the secretary of International Relations of the PRD, immediately said that the election of Vargas as president of SICLAC was of extraordinary importance, not only for supporters of the PRD, but also for all Dominicans. In a press release, sent by the PRD, Cabral said that his election gave a new dimension to his leadership.
