Public opinion has a marked position in favor of the Dominican and Haitian governments resolving their commercial differences over the bans imposed by Haiti on Dominican products. A recent poll taken since the Haitian government announced the ban on Dominican plastics, revealed that 81.2% of the population wants to see an arrangement between friends, whereas 18.8% would prefer mediation by international organizations. Women are more inclined towards a peaceful solution as opposed to men; 83.7 % against 78.8%.
As far as responsibility is concerned, the population appears to be divided into equal parts. When asked whether commercial interests are the responsibility of the government or the private sector, some 42.9% voted for the private sector and 41.2% for the government. 16% were undecided. The survey was carried out for Pulso Dominicana and Telenoticias by Newlink and had a margin of error of 3%.
54% of those interviewed thought the situation could affect the government, 38.5% said not.
