Parties agree on municipal councils

For the seventh time, the ruling PLD, the main opposition PRD and the PRSC parties have signed a “Municipal Democracy and Governance Pact” through which they seek to prevent conflict in the city councils. On 16 August, as a result, city council members and party spokespersons in the city governments and in the National District, will allow the party that obtained the most seats on the council to select the council leadership.

Dominican Municipalities Federation (Fedomu) executive director Victor D’Aza, PLD general secretary for municipal affairs Ignacio Ditren, Dominican Municipal League (LMD) general secretary and PRSC representative Johnny Jones, PRD organizational secretary Junior Santos and others signed the agreement yesterday, Tuesday 13 August. They explained that in the 187 selections of city council leadership groups, belonging to 155 municipalities and 232 municipal districts, they will prevent breakdowns among the party representatives and prevent the election of people to these posts “who make life impossible” for the mayors or the municipal directors.
