The United Nations Unit for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) has announced it is opening of an office in the Dominican Republic.
According to Foreign Relations Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso, the initiative is the result of a meeting between the United Nations and the Dominican government. He said it would be a step forward for women’s rights and against gender inequality.
He went on to say that it would help to strengthen local government institutions that work to improve women’s rights.
Another UN institution that works for women, the United Nations International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW), has been based in Santo Domingo since 1983.
