Papal Nuncio relieved of his post

Yesterday, Monday 26 August it was confirmed that Jozef Wesolowski, the Papal Nuncio in the Dominican Republic has been relieved of his post by the Holy See. He was also responsible for Puerto Rico and Haiti. According to reports, he was removed on 21 August.

According to Vatican Insider, this happened three years after Wesolowksi was involved in a dispute about the supposed misconduct of the Archbishop of San Juan in Puerto Rico, Roberto Gonzalez Nieves. The investigation into accusations made against Archbishop Gonzalez Nieves date back to 2011.

The report goes on to say that the conflict between the two has gone on for a while and it is likely that Monsignor Roberto Gonzales Nieves will also be relieved of his post as he refuses to resign despite several accusations against him, including his alleged protection of pedophile priests.

Wesolowski has so far not been appointed to another post, and Father Richard Allen Gyhra will take over his duties until a permanent appointment is made.

Acento.com.do points out that the decision comes three months after Wesolowksi’s personal friend, Father Wojciech (Alberto Gil for the community of Juncalito where he worked in Santiago) left the country using a forged identity. Wojciech is being sought to face charges for sexual abuse of dozens of children of at his parish, the San Antonio de Padua church.
