San Cristobal cholera outbreak affects dozens

The authorities in San Cristobal have announced a strict monitoring and inspection program of the eleven companies that bottle and sell water out of tanker trucks in the province. Provincial governor Julio Cesar Diaz said that the inspections would be able to find which companies are providing good quality water to their customers and using the correct levels of chlorine treatment. Water plants that fail to meet the required standards will be closed down and fines will be imposed, he says.

A report in Diario Libre says that 69 cholera cases have been reported in the province since last week, with most patients coming the barrios of Pueblo Nuevo and Madre Vieja Norte. Diario Libre reporters who visited the Juan Pablo Pina Hospital found that four persons were hospitalized, two women and two children
