A forest reserve area in the southwestern province of Pedernales is on fire. According to reports, thousands of pine trees, reptiles, insects and other species in the Hoyo de Pelempito Scientific Reserve have been affected by the blaze, which started last Saturday. The fire is also threatening areas in the outskirts of the Bahoruco mountain range, as reported in Hoy. Strong winds have helped spread the fire, making it difficult for the around 250 men who are trying to put out the flames. An estimated 50 kilometers of pine trees have been affected in the panoramic area, say forest rangers. The cause of the fire has not yet been established.
