New homes in San Pedro de Macoris

President Danilo Medina was in the southeastern province of San Pedro de Macoris yesterday, Tuesday 3 September for the start of construction of the first of 568 low- cost homes at the Altos del Higuamo housing development built by the Mexican cement company Cemex. Cemex said the project was begun after the Medina administration created new incentives including the approval of project documentation through a single government entity (Ventanilla Unica) and the extension of the low-cost housing price range to RD$2.4 million. The measures have lowered construction costs. Cemex president Carlos Gonzalez said that homebuyers can also benefit from the governmental housing bonus for up to RD$247,000 and a reduced downpayment. He said that Cemex seeks to provide new social solutions with the housing development. The model housing units are either one of 53 square meters in a single floor and 105 meters lot, or a two-floor duplex unit with 102.5 square meters of construction.

The project, which involved a RD$750 million investment, will total 568 houses when completed. It will include green areas, including a children’s playground.

Gonzalez praised the new government facilities for encouraging foreign investment.

The company is also building the Colinas de Viento housing project in Santo Domingo, with 248 houses, under the Bank Trust Law 189-11.
