Assistant prosecutor German Miranda Villalona has given assurances that two Colombian brothers, Huber Osvaldo Buitrago Ruiz and Angel Maria Buitrago Vacca, will not be released from preventive custody.
They have been identified as heads of a gang that launders money received from drug dealing and were granted bail by a court last week.
Miranda Villalona said there are several legal ways to ensure that they do not leave jail, but the defense lawyers for the brothers are accusing him of overriding the court’s decision.
The agreement to grant bail was a majority decision with judges Pedro Antonio Sanchez Mejia and Luis Omar Jimenez Rosa in favor whereas the head judge, Ramon Horacio Gonzalez Perez, was against.
Immediately, Attorney General Francisco Dominguez Brito described the decision as a crime and said that the Buitrago brothers belonged to one of the most dangerous cartels in South America and the Caribbean, which uses the Dominican Republic to launder millions of dollars and for drug trafficking.
