May Day marked by job losses

Hoy’s financial section leads with the story that today, 1 May, also known as May Day or International Workers’ Day, is being celebrated at a time of heavy job losses. Trade unions are estimating the number of jobs lost since August 2000 at 600,000. May Day this year marks a difficult time for Dominican workers, due to the number of firms going out of business, high inflation and the noticeable reduction in the quality of life. The purchasing power of a Dominican salary has been cut by 23-50%, according to Rafael Abreu, vice-president of CNUS, the National Trade Unions Council. May Day will be celebrated in the Dominican Republic with a day off on Monday, 5 May.
