64 MW solar plant in Monte Plata

Described as the Caribbean’s largest solar park, a 64MW solar plant is now being built in Monte Plata province. The plant will also be only the second-largest project of its kind under construction in Latin America.

Construction will take place in two stages. A first phase of construction aims to have 32.14MW completed and grid connected by the end of next year. The company is making the most of favorable tax conditions for renewable energy projects.

The plant will be built by German developer Wirsol after it was awarded the country’s first power purchase agreement (PPA) for solar power.

The Monte Plata project has received a quality seal for sustainable development from Geneva, and is registered with the United Nations as an emissions-reducing power station. Wirsol is using local contractors from the Dominican Republic for the project, and says that in the future technical management as well as new projects in the region will be built by subsidiary Wirsol Caribbean.
