Every ten days a policeman dies

Yesterday?s List?n Diario carried an article indicating that for every ten-day period, one policeman is killed. In this past week alone, five members of the uniformed service patrol have been killed, including a major and a lieutenant. Four civilians also died over the weekend when they were surprised by a police while breaking into an ATM on Duarte Avenue in Santo Domingo. So far this year, 11 members of the National Police have been killed, and, the newspaper is calling the most recent deaths an ?open-season on police hunting.? On 30 April, Major Terrero Castillo was killed near Invivienda in Santo Domingo. Three days later, Lieutenant Manuel Ram?rez Jim?nez was killed as he tried to stop an incident of vehicular robbery. In the early morning of last Saturday, Private Andr?s Pe?a was killed by unkown assailants. On Sunday at 5:30am, Victoriano Garc?a was killed and Sergeant Wilfredo Matos died hours later. Today?s papers tell of the firefights that ended the lives of three civilians, one of whom was identified as Claudio Alcal? (alias Loquillo), the assassin of police private Pe?a. All three of the civilians had long rap sheets at the police department.
