More than 4,000 taxi drivers in Santiago parked their vehicles at the entrance to the city for two hours yesterday morning, Tuesday 1 October, demanding that the government include them in the social security medical benefits plan.
The protest was organized by the National Center for Transport Workers (CNTT) to which the Cibao Taxi Federation (FETAXIS) is affiliated.
CNTT president Juan Marte said that more than 4,200 taxi drivers stopped work from 9 to 11am along the main Highway near El Embrujo II.
He declared that this protest was not meant to be a confrontation with the government, but that President Danilo Medina should realize that the more than 32,000 taxi drivers in the country needed a helping hand from the authorities as they were under threat of disappearance due to high operating costs.
