The Ministers of Defense of the Dominican Republic and Colombia met with President Danilo Medina to report on progress made in bilateral agreements for national safety at the Presidential Palace yesterday, Thursday 3 October. A mission of high-ranking military and police officers from Colombia is in the country to finalize details for the implementation of seven bilateral cooperation agreements covering air and sea operations to detect irregular trips, exchange of intelligence information, technical training to fight drug trafficking, terrorism and other crimes. Colombian Defense Minister Juan Carlos Pinzon said that a mission from his country would be visiting the Dominican Republic in a month’s time to evaluate the scope of the agreement at police level. The Colombian government plans to assist the country in the modernization of the Police.
The ministers were speaking after their meeting at the Presidential Palace. They said that by working together they have already dealt major blows to the drug trafficking trade. The Colombian Minister of Defense said that in the past 14 years Colombia has achieved a decline of 30%.
