Local doctors teamed up with colleagues from the University of Virginia Commonwealth University medical school to successfully operate on six children and replace their esophagi that had been damaged by swallowing toxic substances. Dr. Fernando Diaz Espinal, head of surgery at the Robert Reid Cabral Children’s Hospital in Santo Domingo said that the complicated procedure has helped six poor children between the ages of three and eight who were unable to swallow. He urged parents to take care not to leave hygiene or beauty products within the reach of small children. In some cases the children ingested the substances because they had been put in soft drink bottles. The participating surgeons were David Leanning, Paulo Boechat, Claudio Oiticica and Robbie Jackson from Virginia.
