Spanish art exhibition

Quinta Dominica on Calle Padre Billini 202 in Santo Domingo’s Colonial City is exhibiting the work of Spanish artists in exile in the Dominican Republic during the Franco dictatorship. The sculptures, paintings and drawings are by Angel Botello Barros, Francisco Fernandez Fierro, Eugenio Fernandez Granell, Josep Gausachs Armengol, Tomas Lopez Ramos, Antonio Prats Ventos, Francisco Vasquez Diaz, Jose Vela Zanetti and Alfonso Vila Shum, and date back to around 1942. The exhibition, “Bright Points in the Caribbean. Spanish artists in the Bellapart Collection” is part of the program of activities for the Spanish Weeks in the Dominican Republic organized by the Embassy of Spain. Visitors can see 20 outstanding works by these nine artists. Myrna Guerrero, director of the Bellapart Museum, says that the artists, with the exception of Alfonso Vila Shum and perhaps Francisco Vasquez Diaz, were students, teachers and even the director of the National School of the Fine Arts that was created in 1942. The exhibition opens at 7pm this evening Monday, 7 October and admission is free.
