President Danilo Medina met with the senior executives from the Falcondo Xstrata Nickel mining company at the Presidential Palace yesterday, Monday 7 October. The company recently announced it would stop all mining operations. It conditioned resuming operations to the approval of the permit to mine in Loma Miranda in the province of La Vega.
Speaking during a press conference after the meeting, company president Darren Bowden said: “Falcondo will make all efforts to restart operations as soon as possible to contribute to the development of the country and the people of Bonao”.
Bowden added that they wanted to keep the relationship they had enjoyed with the Dominican state for more than 40 years and hoped it would continue for many more. He said that he wanted to do everything possible to help the families affected by the closure of the company’s operations.
At the meeting, Falcondo was also represented by chief financial officer David Soares, head of social responsibility programs Alain Astacio, and Arelis Rodriguez, executive director of the Falcondo Foundation.
President Medina was accompanied by the Administrative Minister of the Presidency, Jose Ramon Peralta. The senator for Monsenor Nouel (Bonao) province, Felix Nova was also present at the meeting.
