NY Consulate in the news

The Dominican Consulate in New York City is in the news today for a couple of reasons. The first is that it has bounced a few checks and has no credible reason for doing so. The second is that Jos? Pe?a Guaba, the consul, has announced a program of free services for Dominicans living in the metropolitan area. These services include immigration consultations and a consular identification document. Other services, while not free, are also offered, including the issue of passports. The consul has announced the creation of a mobile consulate to accommodate those Dominicans living in New Jersey and Connecticut who have trouble traveling to New York City. Unfortunately for the consulate, El Caribe and the Diario Libre gave more space to the case of the bad checks than the expanded services. The checks were for amounts of about US$150. Mr. Pe?a Guaba did not have a very good explanation for the reporters, saying: ?We told them to come and change the checks here (at the Consulate). ?Whoever didn?t change them was because they didn?t want to do it.?
