Martha Heredia is back in the news again after appearing on national television on Saturday, 5 October, singing, showing the advances in the new penitentiary and rehabilitation system. News analysts point out that it has opened a Pandora’s Box with comments coming from the public, press and even political leaders.
Yesterday, Monday 7 October, the Attorney General, Francisco Dominguez Brito defended her appearance and that of some other inmates from the Rafey jail in Santiago on several television programs, not only on “Con Domingo y el Pacha” on Saturday.
He said that the idea was for a group of inmates, as happens every year, to visit some television stations and broadcast anti-drug messages. He regretted that many people perceived the reverse and saw it as negative, but that was never the intention.
Her appearance has been discussed on television, radio and across the social networks with most commentators saying that although she has not yet been found guilty, she is in jail accused of smuggling heroin to the United States in her shoes and should not be performing on television. Most expressed disapproval at the fact that she has not yet had time to repent after less than a year served in jail and that she is the object of favoritism and preferential treatment.
In an editorial today, Tuesday 8 October, El Dia criticizes the decision to allow her to leave the jail to record a new album with Roy Tabare. The newspaper says that there must have been better examples than Heredia among the inmates in the jail.
