Pay rise agreed for medical staff

According to the Minister of Public Health, Freddy Hidalgo, representatives of public hospital doctors and nurses have agreed to a 10% wage increase starting in January 2014. The funds will be included in the 2014 National Budget.

The news was announced by Hidalgo and the president of the Dominican Medical Association (CMD) Amarilis Herrera, following a three-hour meeting where they discussed the salary increase, pensions and long service incentives.

Hidalgo said that the salary increase would cost RD$2.5 billion and that an addendum to the National Budget would be submitted for Congress to include the raise.

CMD president Amarilis Herrera said that although the meeting was positive it had not met their demands as the doctors were seeking a 60% increase. However, whilst the average would receive 10% more, due to the incentives, some would receive increases of up to 40%.
