President Danilo Medina, speaking at the IX Ibero-American Business Meeting, organized by the Business Forum for Latin America (CEAL) yesterday, Thursday 17 October prior to the sessions of the 23rd Ibero-American Summit for the Heads of State and Government that is taking place in Panama, advocated for a regional alliance to create wealth and jobs to encourage development.
“I am convinced that the only way for our countries to develop is with a strong alliance between business and governments. That is why we are promoting a solid business sector in the DR,” he said.
Medina said that the Dominican Republic was in the process of expanding the country’s human and economic potential using public policies and projects to increase quality of life of the people by way of improving education, health services and creating jobs.
He went on to stress the importance of a qualified workforce and solid middle class for a diversified and competitive economy. He said his government is putting more effort than ever before behind small entrepreneurs. He said they were taking thousands and thousands of people out of poverty sustainably, by creating jobs, providing microcredit and financial assistance as well as social programs.
He called on the business sector to bring their investments and projects to the Dominican Republic, highlighting the country’s dynamism and economic health, business opportunities, availability of trained human capital, saying that the state was on the way to being both modern and transparent. He stressed the success of sectors such as tourism, agriculture, foreign investment, industrial free zones, the road infrastructure and the good air and sea connections.
