The reconciliatory lunch between PRD President Hatuey Decamps and President Hip?lito Mej?a, which was organized by fellow PRD presidential hopeful Rafael (Fello) Suberv? Bonilla, and was planned for today, has been postponed. The newspapers report that Decamps wants to meet with other party figures before sitting down with the President to discuss their differences of opinion over the re-election issue. Decamps is strongly opposed to Mej?a?s ambitions for a second term of office. Suberv? Bonilla had planned the meeting in order to “reduce tension” and to restore unity within the party. The meeting had been scheduled prior to Mej?a?s departure for a 12-day tour to Europe and the US.
Reiterating his passionate stance against re-election, which according to him had always been the cornerstone of PRD policy, Decamps declared that he would “retire” from the party if he discovered that there were “any document supporting re-election”.
