The executive director of the Dominican Consumer Advocacy Institute (ProConsumidor) Altagracia Paulino says that her organization aims to receive one million complaints and fight what she describes as the culture of consumer fraud in the country. She said the organization has received 4,000 complaints, and she encouraged consumers to demand their rights, by presenting complaints in the case of abuses.
“I want the number of people who say they are victims of theft to reach one million. I want to get to that point so we can see what can be done together with the authorities because there is always talk about corruption in the public sector, but in this position I have seen that if you throw a penny backwards it falls standing up. I don’t know which is more corrupt, the private or the public sector,” she told Diario Libre in an interview.
Paulino says that most cases are presented for misrepresentation in the sale of real estate and construction issues.
