Need to fight against dengue

The Ministry of Public Health plans to boost its program to fight the dengue epidemic that has claimed more than 90 lives this year.

Heath Minister Freddy Hidalgo and Deputy Minister Rafael Schiffino said that the initiative would focus on the provinces with higher incidence of the disease.

They said that they planned to stem the number of deaths and provide better training to hospital staff.

By 24 October the number of deaths by dengue in 2013 increased with 22 cases more than the same period last year, and the number of people infected went up from 3,595 to 12,609.

Experts forecast that by the end of December, more than 15,000 will have been infected and more than 100 deaths will have been recorded.

In the meantime a four-year old girl and a 40-year old man died of dengue in Santiago. Franchesca Pena came from the area of La Canela, de Santiago, and Hermen Padilla lived in the Cecara area to the north of the city.

The girl’s grandmother, Altagracia Pena Duarte, said that she was taken to a doctor in Santiago last Wednesday, 23 October complaining of a fever, vomiting, headache and aches throughout her body but the doctor diagnosed a viral infection and sent her home. They then took her to a private clinic on Sunday, 27 October but she died the following day.
