Pablo Cedano is first bishop to be retired

The auxiliary bishop of Santo Domingo, 77-year old Monsignor Pablo Cedano is the first on a list of senior clerics to be sent to retirement. As reported in Hoy, Cedano sent in a resignation letter to Pope Francis on the grounds of his age. Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Rodriguez recently announced that several aging bishops and archbishops were due for retirement, including himself.

Monsignor Cedano was recently in the news when he openly expressed his opposition to the US government naming of Wally Brewster, a real estate and marketing expert, as ambassador to the Dominican Republic, in replacement of Raul Yzaguirre. Cedano described the US decision to send a gay rights activist as ambassador to the country as “inconsiderate”.

The Roman Catholic Church establishes that all bishops over the age of 75 need to retire from their posts.

Other clerics who have reached retirement age include 75-year old Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez, and three bishops, 75-year old Rafael Leonidas Felipe Nunez (Barahona), 75-year old Antonio Camilo Gonzalez (La Vega) and 75-year old Amancio Escapa Aparicio (Santo Domingo). The archbishop of Santiago, 74-year old Ramon Benito de la Rosa y Carpio is also nearing retirement age.
