Campaign to educate drivers in the Dominican Republic

With the aim of contributing to responsible driving, the Mapfre Foundation and AMET (Metropolitan Transport Authority) announced the distribution of 190,000 copies of the “Safe Driving Manual” yesterday, Wednesday 13 November. The manual will be distributed where AMET conducts classes, talks and workshops, as well as in public schools, private schools, universities and work sites

According to statistics from AMET, traffic accident deaths are the leading cause of death in the country, taking the lives of more than 1,500 citizens each year and leaving another 3,000 injured, as reported in Diario Libre. In addition, according to information published by the World Health Organization (WHO), the Dominican Republic is ranked second on the list of countries with the highest rate of traffic accident deaths per capita in the world at 41.7 per 100,000 inhabitants. Only the island nation of Niue with a rate of 68.3/100 (a tiny island of less than 100 square miles and fewer than 2000 inhabitants) in the Pacific has more accidents per capita than the DR.

Luis Gutierrez from the Mapfre Foundation and AMET director General Juan Geronimo Brown Perez signed a cooperation agreement so that together with this strategy they can continue working towards other policies.
