Yesterday, Wednesday 13 November some 10,000 teachers went on strike for higher wages in Santiago, halting classes in most local public schools. With the support of the Dominican Public Schoolteachers Association (ADP), they are calling for a 100% salary increase. In Santiago, the demonstrators marched down several streets until they reached the offices of the provincial governor, Aura Toribio, who received the written portfolio of demands which she said would be delivered to President Danilo Medina. ADP spokesman Abel Gonzalez told reporters from Hoy that the 12% salary adjustment last year was “swallowed up by inflation.”
