The Caribbean Community (Caricom) meeting scheduled for Monday 18 November in Trinidad and Tobago, called to discuss potential action against the Dominican Republic in response to the Constitutional Court nationality and legalization ruling has been postponed indefinitely.
The Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago and head of Caricom, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, confirmed the decision in an interview yesterday, Tuesday 19 November with the Trinidad Guardian newspaper.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Relations Cesar Dargam told Listin Diario that although the Dominican Republic had not been invited to the meeting they were obviously following its progress and were strengthening their contact not only with Caricom as a body but also the individual member countries.
The meeting to agree on measures against the Dominican Republic was called in response to a request from Persad-Bissessar, the Secretary General of Caricom, Irwin LaRocque, and the Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Ralph Gonsalves.
The President of Haiti, Michel Martelly, was also due to be at the meeting,
Neither Caricom nor Trinidad and Tobago, nor the Haitian government could explain why the meeting had been postponed although the Trinidad Guardian newspaper said that several key representatives who were supposed to attend, including from Haiti, “were unavailable”.
