The initial happiness that was felt by the children and relatives of Sonia Capellan (Yoya) upon hearing from her after 20 years is now cloaked with sadness. Yesterday, Wednesday 27 November they were able to hear her voice in a telephone conversation, but they also found out that she is suffering from breast cancer and is in the process of receiving chemotherapy in Costa Rica, the country to which she immigrated two decades ago in search of better living conditions. “She is hospitalized there,” said her daughter Xiomara Pena Capellan, between sobs. Sonia, 62, could talk to her children and with her mother Minerva Capellan, thanks to a conference call that was made by Luis Laguero, a man from Barahona, who lives in Puerto Rico and heard of the woman’s wish to know about her family after the Diario Libre published an appeal on Tuesday, 26 November.
