Ceremony for World AIDS day

President Danilo Medina and Vice President Margarita Cedeno de Fernandez headed a ceremony in commemoration of World Fight Against HIV/AIDS Day at the Presidential Palace yesterday, Monday 2 December.

The executive director of the National Council for HIV and AIDS (Conavihsida), Victor Terrero, thanked the President for his support and said that the government was showing political will to reduce HIV/AIDS in the country.

Terrero added that significant progress has been made in the fight against AIDS but that there was still much left to do. He declared that their goal is for the day to come when no child would be born in the Dominican Republic with HIV/AIDS.

The Minister for Public Health, Freddy Hidalgo, said that the government had provided RD$79 million to fight the disease and buy antiretroviral medicines for 34,674 people affected.
