The Ministry of Public health spends around RD$5.3 billion every year on Haitian patients, which is around 10% of the total health budget for the year. Of 512,000 consultations for patients at the five border provinces with its 15 municipal hospitals, 38,000 were for Haitians. At a national level, most consultations were in the Greater Santo Domingo with 14,629 consultations and 4,537 hospitalizations. Regardless of status, foreigners receive free surgery, clinical analysis, blood transfusions, C-sections, vaccinations and antenatal appointments at the hospitals, as reported in Diario Libre.
