The Senate approved last night a part of the new Penal Code that will prescribe life imprisonment for certain heinous crimes. Article 40 of the new code sanctions life in prison for presidential assassination, genocide, summary execution, crimes against humanity and kidnapping when it involves torture and death of the victim. The new code also increases the maximum sentence for crimes such as rape and murder from 30 years to 40.. Another article that was passed by unanimous vote was article 63, which imposes a moral responsibility on the State when a person accused of one crime goes on to commit another.
