Dominican journalist Alfredo Freites comments in today’s Listin Diario, Monday 9 December that Haiti does not grant Haitian nationality to children born to illegal immigrants in Haiti, while demanding that the Dominican Republic do so to its undocumented nationals. “In practice, Haiti denies nationality to the children of Haitians because it lacks a trustworthy civil registry,” he writes. “The children of Haitians are Haitians, but it is difficult to establish” he says.
The Haitian government applies its Constitution when granting Haitian nationality in Haiti, he writes. “Nevertheless, one thing is what is done there and another policy is applied for here.” “Dominicans have to be magnanimous. If not we are criticized for being racist, discriminatory, Nazis and all the worst.”
