PRSC legislator Victor (Ito) Bisono has called for a clear willingness from the international community to help tackle the collapse of Haiti. “Haiti is a topic that the international community should deal with all together, not only for charity, but for strengthening their institutions. Much is needed to bring about the progress that is needed in areas such as the economy, employment and health.” He said that the DR needs to be part of the effort to help Haiti, but it cannot carry the burden alone. Bisono spoke of a need to modernize and reform the border police, saying that the creation of a more professional border security system needed to be prioritized.
“We need to define how people are admitted so that we can allow the workers that our economy needs and block the free entry of those who pose a threat to national and international security,” he said. He said that South American cartels have used the Haiti-DR route as a transshipment point to reach the US and Europe, taking advantage of Haiti to move closer to the markets in the US and Europe. Combined with the weak controls at the border, stressed Bisono, this facilitates the transport to the final destination of the drugs. He was speaking during the Ministry of Education’s 8th International Model United Nations (MINUME 2013) sponsored by the Group of Experts in Security and Defense, as reported in Listin Diario.
