Procrastinators were given a break by the Department of Taxes with the announcement that the 700 extra points of sale at banks nationwide of the “marbetes” or vehicular tax would continue to issue the stickers in January 2014. The original deadline expired on 31 December. Late payers will charged a RD$600 fee. As reported in Diario Libre, 125,697 vehicles will be subject to the additional fine. The DGII has issued 874,303 marbetes, or 87.43% of the million estimated.
Vehicles without the sticker risk being towed away by Metropolitan Transport Authority (AMET) agents.
The DGII announced that the new stickers have been reinforced with a Datamatrix code that allows for verifying whether the sticker genuinely corresponds to the vehicle.
