Santiago bypass “80% completed”

During a visit to Santiago yesterday, 1 January The Minister of Public Works and Communications Gonzalo Castillo and told reporters that three shifts are working on the Santiago bypass 24 hours a day. The new beltway will link the Duarte Highway and circle around the northern part of the city and link to the highway to Puerto Plata. The city has been waiting for this project to be completed for nearly 19 years. The minister said that the project is due for completion and inauguration by the end of February. The toll road, which is estimated to cost RD$100, is 24 kms long and has four lanes and 34 overpasses. The road is expected to cut driving time from Santo Domingo to Puerto Plata by around half an hour (to around 2:30 hr) because travelers will no longer have to deal with traffic jams when crossing through the city of Santiago.
