6.4 earthquake in Puerto Rico felt in DR

A strong earthquake out to sea shook northern Puerto Rico at 12:01 am on Monday, 13 January. It lasted for 10 seconds. Only minor damage was reported in some places. Media reports in Puerto Rico say it is the strongest earthquake recorded on the island since one that occurred on 11 October 1918. Some people reported items falling in their homes and dozens said they felt buildings sway in the capital San Juan, about 61 miles (98 kilometers) from the quake’s epicenter. The US Geological Survey said the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.4 and struck just after midnight about 35 miles (57 kilometers) north of Hatillo. It said the quake occurred 17 miles (28 kilometers) deep. According to social media reports, the quake was also felt in many parts of the Dominican Republic.

The UASD Seismologic Institute reports the quake measured 6.8 on the Richter scale and was felt in several parts of the Dominican Republic, especially in the east.
