The Attorney General of the Republic Francisco Dominguez Brito has disclosed that during 2013 the rate of femicides in the country was the lowest in the last eight years, with a total of 74 deaths in this category. A preliminary report indicates that there were 98 femicides in 2005, while there was a total of 99 women victims in 2006. The report shows that during 2007, 89 women were killed, while in 2008 there were 131 deaths of women at the hands of their partners or former partners. This number dropped to 92 in 2009, but in 2010 it increased to 97. Meanwhile, in 2011 the number increased to 128 victims. In 2012, the number of women killed was 103, a number that went down in 2013 to 73 femicides.
“We will continue implementing all of the necessary actions in order to save the lives of our women. It is a day-to-day struggle, which we take on with all of the faith in our power to reach the goal of “Each Day Less, Until We Reach Zero,” the Attorney General told reporters. He said that the statistics for the 2012-2013 period represented a 28.16% variation.
