Burden of Baninter solely on private sector?

As reported in Hoy newspaper, the National Council of Business (CONEP) protested that measures taken by the Monetary Board are putting most of the burden of the Baninter case on the private sector. ?The private sector should not carry the bulk of the responsibility for the adjustments. The government has a large share of responsibility, especially for what happened in the past eight months, which obliges it to implement strong fiscal discipline measures,? said CONEP in an official statement.
The CONEP statement says that as a society, among the lessons to be learned is that one cannot be so permissive, one cannot just look the other way until the evidence is out in the open.
CONEP urges that the government clarify the choice of Judge Eduardo Sanchez Ortiz to hear the case. The judge has two corruption investigations pending, as reported in the List?n Diario.
The organization requests that the public may follow the process, that it strictly adhere to the law and that those responsible be made to pay.
The statement affirms that the case imposes a 10-year mortgage on the future of the country, as the financial gap is approximately the size of the 2003 government budget.
The leading Dominican business group says that how this is handled will mark the difference between progressing to a fairer and more serious society that is less permissive and corrupt. CONEP congratulates the new monetary authorities for taking action and assuming responsibility, and focuses on the share of responsibility of the past three administrations.
