Car-Free Day in San Francisco

The people of the northeastern city of San Francisco de Macoris made a formal statement yesterday for increased national awareness about the environment. The city organized the first car-free day when most people left their cars and motorcycles at home ? ?Aire Limpio y Vida Sana? or ?Clean Air, Healthy Living?.
The event was organized by the Universidad Catolica Nordestana, the office of the Archbishop, the Quita Espuela Foundation and neighborhood and civic organizations.
Monsignor De Jesus Moya highlighted the need for people to become aware of the importance of preserving the environment in the Mass that opened the activity.
The governor of Duarte province, Luis Elias Esmurdoc described the activity as a success because of the support of the people of San Francisco. He challenged other provinces to repeat the experience as a way of creating nationwide awareness. He argued that by preserving the environment, residents of San Francisco de Macoris would be contributing to a better life for all, including less time spent visiting doctors.
Senator for Duarte province, Machaco Gonzalez said that he would submit a bill that would declare 8 May as a nationwide Clean Air Day.
