IADB to mediate Cogentrix conflict

The Inter American Development Bank (IADB) will intervene in the conflict between the Cogentrix power generation facility and the Dominican government. At present, the Dominican government rejects the terms of the contract, saying that it would lose US$1.2 billion over the next 20 years. Cogentrix says that their contract was approved by the Dominican Congress and is, therefore, completely legal and binding. Enrique Iglesias, the head of the IADB, has accepted a proposal to mediate the case, made by President Mej?a during his recent trip to Washington, D.C. Dominican officials presented the directors of the IADB a case-history of the conflict, including the fact that they had paid US$22 million on account, according to a memorandum agreed to, but not signed by government.
