2002 Census shows many abortions

The 2002 Census shows that 10% of the 82,000 abortions performed each year in the Dominican Republic are for adolescents between the ages of 15 and 19. Altagracia Suriel, director of the program called Integral Development of Boys, Girls, and Adolescents, and run by the NGO Visi?n Mundial (World Vision), says that these numbers are nothing less than alarming. She advocates better education and information in order to allow adolescent women to plan their sexual and reproductive lives. The census shows that three of every six pregnancies in adolescence are neither planned nor wanted. At the La Altagracia Maternity Hospital in Santo Domingo, 22% of the pregnant women seeking assistance are adolescents. These numbers are in addition to the thousands of teenagers whose lives are changed forever when they decide to keep their babies.
