A project to prevent teenage pregnancies is being implemented by the non-governmental agency Pro Joven Dominicano in the province of Bahoruco. The plan, which is getting assistance from a municipality in Spain, hopes to reach out to 12,000 area residents, aged 10-24 years, in its first year. Municipal Youth Councils will train 300 teenagers who in turn will serve as program promoters. The two year program seeks to reach out to a total of 20,550 youths in the area using a RD$2.4 million investment. Some 60 high school professors will also receive training to counsel public school students on the perils of teen pregnancy and contracting AIDS.
