La Vega Judge Franklin Rosario Abreu sentenced two hunters to the payment of RD$100,000 and RD$300,000 indemnifications and eight months in jail for illegally hunting birds in danger of extinction. The Biodiversity and Protected Areas Department of the Ministry of Environment pressured the case against them. The Ministry accused the hunters of capturing over 50 species native to the DR, including the Aratinga chloptera parrot that is in danger of extinction. The twosome was also accused of destroying breeding habitats of the birds.
