El Siglo newspaper points out in its headline story today that the announced US$368 million Ozama project the government signed recently with an Italian consortium clashes with another plan already approved to be implemented with funds from the European Union. The Programa de Saneamiento de Barrios Marginados, Sabamar calls for the garbage collection, installation of potable water systems, resolving of health problems, construction of latrines, and construction of washing areas in 16 of the barrios located alongside the river. These are the same barrios that the Italian consortium proposes to evict, including La Cienaga, La Zurza, Los Guandules, Gualey and Clarin.
